Carrión, Juan de. A violero with this name appeared in Toledo in 1545. Juan de Carrión took on a lease of a workshop in an area that in 1537 was known as " a los lauderos" but that in 1545 was known as "a los violeros". 1 Juan de Carrión was paid 34 ducats for a large and another small harp in 1563 2 and in 1565 he received 6.750 maravedies as payment for a harp, for repairing another harp and for a cittern. 3 He was at the meeting of violeros in Madrid in 1577 to elect examiners and overseers and he voted for Hernando Bejarano and Baltasar de Medina. Juan de Carrión and Hernando Bejarano received the most votes and were elected to be examiners and overseers for 1578. A witness signed the document on his behalf as he was illiterate. 4 He was one of the examiners of Juan Rodríguez in 1578.5 [see Appendix No.3] At a meeting of violeros to elect overseers and examiners for the Guild in 1578 he voted for Hernando Bejarano and Antonio Duarte. He was nominated to be an overseer and examiner for 1579. 6 He was one of the musical instrument makers who met in 1584 to request to change some of the rules in the Ordinances.7 [see Appendix No.11. The partly written signature of Juan de Carrión beedor appeared on this document but this seems to have been signed by proxy after Juan de Carrión had made an attempt to sign and failed] He was an overseer for 1587 and he was at the meeting of musical instrument makers in Madrid to change some of the conditions of the earlier Ordinances of violeros. 8 [see entry for Cristóbal Bejarano] In 1588 he was one of the examiners of Pedro Tofiño. 9 [see Appendix No. 4] In 1602 Juan de Rojas Carrión, foreman and examiner for the Guild, stated that his late grandfather, Juan de Carrión, had invented the double-course harp and had taught him to make it as well. His grandfather also examined him on the harp, vihuela and cello in imitation of the foreign instruments (arpas y biguela y biolon a imitacion de los extranjeros). 10 In another document he reiterated the statement about his grandfather.11 Diego Fernández swore on oath in 1607 that he knew that Juan de Aldaz had been examined by Juan de Carrión in 1586 on a plain vihuela (una biguela llana). 12 [see Appendix No. 5] In 1621 the violero Juan de Rojas Carrión stated that his grandfather had died fifteen (sic) years previously and that he had made and repaired instruments for the King as official violero to the Royal Household. 13

Dalp Miranda, Theodosio. (b.c.1665) Theodosio Dalp Miranda was born in Valencia. He was about twenty-three years old, of medium height, thickset and with limp dark brown hair. He had been working as an apprentice and a journeyman in Madrid and the provinces making musical instruments (de edad de veinte y tres años poco mas o menos que es un hombre de mediana estatura y de cuerpo reicho pelo castaño oscuro laso y nos hizo relazion diziendo que abia ejerzido en esta corte y en otros ciudades el arte de violero de muchos años). He was examined for his mastership in 1688 by Marcos Jiménez, Francisco de Campos and Pedro de Aguilar on a vihuela with bourdons, a double-course harp and a viol (bigüela de bordones, un arpa de dos ordenes y una bigüela de arco). He also had to cut out paper patterns for instruments and answer questions about the art of musical instrument making. 1 Theodosio Dalp was one of the signatories to the contract drawn up in 1695. 2 [see entry for Juan de Beazcochea] In 1702 he was an examiner when Antonio de Campos took his examination. 3 In 1705 4 and again in 1706 Joseph Cossa gave Theodosio Dalp power of attorney to act on his behalf as he was in prison. 5 Theodosio Dalp’s wife, Manuela de Regaldía, made her will in 1709 6 and in that year their son Joaquín was born in calle del Carmen, Madrid, in a house owned by Pedro Cubero. 7 He was an examiner in 1709 when Marcos Jiménez 8 and Francisco Cabezudo 9 were examined. The meeting was held in his house. In 1709 Theodosio Dalp, Manuela Antonia Regaldía, Leonardo Regaldía, Gerónimo and Phelipe Dalp were living in calle del Carmen, in a house owned by Mateo de Tobar. 10 None of those names appeared at that address in the following year. His son Manuel Joseph was born in 1710. 11 In 1713 his wife testified that she was ill and that she would like to be buried in the parish church of San Ginés. They had six children. 12 In 1714 Manuel de Ocampo was to marry his daughter Manuela. His wife had already died by that date. 13 In 1715 Theodosio Dalp made an inventory of his goods and chattels that he was taking into his second marriage with Josepha Sayz de Medina. 14 [see Appendix No. 22] In 1716 Theodosio Dalp was living with his wife Josepha Sayz de Medina in calle del Carmen, in a house owned by Bernabela Cubero. At the same address were Gerónimo Dalp, Luisa García and Manuel Maldonado.15 In 1717 only the guitar maker Francisco Valcarce appeared at that address. Manuel de Ocampo, Theodosio Dalp’s son-in-law, gave his wife, Manuela Dalp, power of attorney. 16 In 1717 Theodosio Dalp was one of the examiners of Alexo Jiménez 17 [see Appendix No.8] and two year old Manuel de Campos. 18 [see Appendix No.9] Manuela Dalp, widow of Manuel de Ocampo, named her son, Antonio Manuel de Ocampo as her heir. 19 In 1720 Theodosio Dalp was at the Guild meeting to elect officials for the following year. 20 In 1724 his unmarried son, Theodosio Dalp, who played the violin in the Royal Chapel, testified that he was ill. 21 The master guitar maker, Theodosio Dalp, declared that the capital from his marriage had been spent and stated that he had some tools which were used for his work but which were in a poor and battered state (herramienta mui gastada y maltratada tocante a su exercicio). His heirs were his surviving children from his first marriage: Phelipe, Gerónimo, Manuela, Manuel and Juana. 22 His son, Gerónimo Dalp, who also played the violin in the Royal Chapel, gave power of attorney to Fernando del Castillo. 23 In 1730 his son Gerónimo, married to Josepha Pérez, declared before the notary, Leonardo Antonio de Regaldía, that they had no goods and chattels and that their daughter Rosalía Valentína was their sole heir and that his parents had both died by that date. 24 Gerónimo Dalp was living in calle Carretas when he died on 30 March 1735. 25
